Homage to „Erika“
(With Respect to „Erika“)

In the 60-ies of the last century I met the boys from Zlatá Idka, from the village bellow the bare hill called Kojšova Hoľa.
They used to come to us, to Jasov as there was the nine-year elementary school and they started to attend it in the sixth grade. They came in heavy boots, they were strong, tall and they liked winter. They know how to ski and how to do cross-country skiing. I enjoyed being with them.
Some of them saw the train for the first time here. I remember that we called Kojšova Hoľa “Kopas” or “Erika”. We looked upon to it with respect it was tall and at the same time very distant bare hill that used to be under snow from very early autumn till late spring.
Even today I have some friends, my former schoolmates and we look forward to meeting each other somewhere near Erika. We used to meet mainly in the tea-room Katka or in the chalet called Erika. After that we walked or ran on skis to our beloved Kojšova Hoľa and surroundings.
Up there, it is on the top of Kojšova Hoľa, beautiful dominant of the countryside that is 1246 metres above the sea, we had met regularly and each of us contributed with something to mutual refreshment, or we just greeted each other and enjoyed beautiful views from there.

When visibility is good, you can see all the peaks of the High Tatras. You can also see Kráľova Hoľa that is white most of the year.
The valley of Jasov with “the Rock” - can be seen as well.
Even “Ironworks” can be seen from there. My friends are suspicious that I go to Kojšova Hoľa just to check if the Cooking Plant in Ironworks is doing well.
You can also see a part of Košice and I mentioned just a fraction of that what you can see from Kojšova Hoľa. Beautiful.
A capable tourist can reach Kojšova Hoľa by walking along marked tourist path. Some climbings are organized and they have their own tradition. We traditionally go there on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the coming of the New Year.
The weather is not always favourable to us. We witnessed the wind and snowing, the frost that did not allow us to be on the top even couple of minutes but we had also nice, sunny weather there. And our meetings ended in the tea-room Katka, when we were offered tea, frankfurters and other titbits. We were served by “young men” Milan and later Tomy.
It was obvious that we visited the chalet “Erika” bellow the Erika hill and after that on our way back we stopped at the tea-room Katka. It was always a nice event to meet friends-former schoolmates from Malá Idka, who worked as ski-lift maintenants or to meet “Yetti” who reproduced music very loudly into the country and at the same time he was very good in weather forecast.
But last New Year’s Eve it was sad. There was no warm place anywhere. Strong wind and coldness drove away all people. There was no place to go into as the chalet “Erika” has been out of business for the four years and our favourite tea-room Katka - the same for at last two years. It is terrible.

We used to go by the first 7 o’clock bus to Zlatá Idka as we knew we could have had our breakfast at the chalet Erika before we went up to the top of Kojšova Hoľa and that in the case of bad weather we had had some place to hide, to drink something and to refresh and warm ourselves in the tea-room Katka.

It is the end of August and I had not met my former schoolmates so far. I admit that I do not go to the bare Kojšova Hoľa so frequently as before because of the above mentioned facts. I prefer to go from Košice to Jahodná and then to Lajoška as I know that I can have some refreshment there and for sure I will meet some friends there.

There will be winter in no time and I hope that we will be able to meet our friends, after climbing to Kojšova Hoľa, in a chalet or in a tea-room.
Of course, those who love to go there in spite of all mentioned above.
Homage to “Erika”.
Our beautiful Slovakia
